Venezuelan Interior and Justice Minister Diosdado Cabello stated on Monday that Brazil’s decision to block Venezuela’s entry as an associated member of BRICS could weaken Brazil’s international standing.
Cabello remarked, “this is another chapter in this war; from here, Venezuela and the position of BRICS emerge strengthened, while Brazil is left weakened in the eyes of the world”.
He claimed that excluding Venezuela is a “direct attack” on BRICS, as its inclusion would have given the bloc approximately 60% of global oil reserves.
President Nicolás Maduro also voiced his opinion upon returning from the BRICS summit in Russia, asserting that “no one will block or silence Venezuela.” He described Brazil’s veto as a “hostile gesture” and an “aggression” against Venezuelan interests.
Analysts suggest that this veto may signify a significant rupture in the historically complex relations between Venezuela and Brazil, particularly following accusations of electoral misconduct during Venezuela’s recent elections.
